Alicante

Located right in the Costa Blanca, Alicante is one of the most important tourist destinations of the Spanish Levantine
area. Its wide offer of golf courses and its Mediterranean calm waters are some of the main attractions offered by this
beautiful port city located at the foot of the Santa Barbara Castle, which has silently witnessed numerous civilizations
throughout the history. Its old quarter, located at the foot of this fortress, hides an interesting civil and religious
architectural legacy. And we mustn’t forget the emblematic Explanada de España, a traditional leisure area for its
residents.
The city of Alicante rises up on a hill opposite the sea, in the centre of a wide bay. This Mediterranean enclave
enjoys an exceptional weather, protected from winds, which turns it into an ideal place in winter. Alicante is a bright
and friendly city, with an old quarter full of narrow streets and a nice promenade flanked by palm trees. From far-off
times, this place has been successively occupied by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, who were attracted by
its wonderful location. Later, the Muslims arrived and called the city “Al Luchan”. Once it was conquered by the
Aragonese troops, it became a part of the Aragonese kingdom in the 13th century.
If variety is the spice of life, Alicante provides it: it is not a trite expression. This city, which has approximately
300,000 inhabitants, combines classicism with modernness, leisure with business, fun with study and even beach with
mountain right in the urban centre.
Likewise, Alicante is a city with a long history, so many archaeological remains from the year 3.000 before Christ
have been found in the surrounding area; there are remains of a first Iberian urban settlement dating back to the end
of the 5th century before Christ; it moves into its bimillenary as a Roman municipality, a category that the emperor
Augustus gave at the beginning of our age to the city, which was at that time called Lucentum;
it has been considered a city for more than 500 years, thanks to Fernando el Catolico in 1490; it shows the Golden
Fleece in its shield, a privilege granted by Carlos V in 1524. An important tourist city thanks to its splendid
beaches and a calm weather during the whole year, it also offers monuments and numerous festivals and cultural meetings,
which are celebrated almost every month. The huge economic activity of the whole province (the fourth in Spain as
regards the gross domestic product and number of residents) together with the growing number of people studying in
the university (forty thousand students divided into the Alicante and the Miguel Hernandez Universities) have
encouraged the existence of a well-consolidated tradition as regards the organization of any kind of congresses,
conferences and professional meetings. The 21st century, the new millennium, shows us a prosperous city, in a
constant evolution, with an added dynamism: one of the European Union offices is located here and very soon the
original “Ciudad de la Luz” Project will be inaugurated. It also offers a great welcoming cordiality and a wide offer,
both cultural and recreational, which encourage people to visit the city at any moment.
